Drainage Maintenance Is Preventive Maintenance
A drainage system may look simple from the surface, but its performance depends on many individual components working together. Pipe must maintain proper slope. Connections need to direct water with the flow of the system. Catch basins and cleanouts must remain accessible. Discharge points need to remain open. Pumps and float switches must operate correctly. And underground lines need to remain clear enough to move the water they were designed to carry.

Construction Drainage Inspections — Inspect It Before You Build Over It
One of the most valuable services our Drain Maintenance Division can provide has nothing to do with an old or clogged drainage system. It is inspecting a new drainage system before construction makes that system inaccessible.
This is particularly important when drainage piping will eventually be located beneath:

- Patios
- Pool decks
- Foundations or structures
- Retaining-wall areas
- Expensive landscaping
- Outdoor living spaces
- Other permanent improvements
Dallas Drainage Pros’ Technical Standards specifically calls for stronger pipe such as SDR-35 PVC to be considered where structural support is important or where future repairs would be unusually expensive, including beneath a home or costly outdoor living space. Our standards also require elevations to be verified, critical components to be photographed before covering, and drainage systems to be tested before completion.
There is a reason for that standard.
The best time to discover an underground drainage problem is while you can still see and reach it.
Once thousands of square feet of concrete have been poured over a drainage system, what may have been a relatively straightforward correction can become an enormously expensive construction problem.
A Recent Project Nearly Became a Very Expensive Example
We recently received a call from a builder who was preparing to pour a multi-thousand square foot concrete driveway.
- The drainage underneath the future driveway had already been installed by others.
- Fortunately, we were called to inspect the system before the concrete was poured.
- Unfortunately, because the system was already installed, we had to rebuild the entire property drainage system from scratch.
Our team inspected the drainage installation the day before the concrete pour and discovered extensive problems with the underground system. The builder had no idea how poorly portions of the drainage had been installed because most of the important work was underground and was about to disappear permanently beneath the driveway.
Had the concrete been poured first, correcting those drainage problems could have required removing substantial portions of a brand-new driveway, repairing or replacing the drainage beneath it, and then rebuilding the concrete.
A drainage problem that was still accessible one day could have become a mistake costing hundreds of thousands of dollars the next. Fortunately for this builder, they called us just in time.

What We Look For Before Construction Continues
When evaluating an accessible drainage installation, our team can review the system against Dallas Drainage Pros’ current technical standards and the applicable project requirements.
Depending on the system and scope of inspection, that may include reviewing:

- Pipe slope and available fall
- Direction of flow
- Fittings and connections
- Low points or potential bellies
- Cleanout and camera access
- Catch basin and inlet elevations
- Outlet elevations and conditions
- French drain materials and construction
- Pump systems and discharge piping
- Connections to existing drainage
- Construction damage
- Accessibility for future maintenance
- Overall system layout and serviceability
For Dallas Drainage Pros installations, our baseline standard requires gravity drainage piping to maintain a minimum 1% slope unless an approved engineered or project-specific exception applies. We use smooth-wall PVC as our standard drainage material, flow-oriented fittings, practical inspection and cleaning access, and functional discharge points.
Those details matter underground.
They matter even more when someone is about to put several hundred thousand dollars’ worth of construction on top of them.
A Valuable Quality-Control Step for Builders
Builders routinely inspect structural, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and other critical building systems at different stages of construction. Drainage deserves the same attention.
A drainage inspection before backfill, concrete, landscaping, or other permanent construction can provide an additional layer of quality control when corrections are still practical. This is particularly valuable when drainage has been installed by multiple contractors or when a builder, general contractor, or property owner wants an experienced drainage company to independently evaluate the installation before proceeding.
Our purpose is not simply to find fault. It is to determine whether the visible and accessible system appears prepared to do its job—and to identify concerns while there is still an opportunity to address them.
An inspection cannot guarantee the future performance of work installed by another contractor, and concealed conditions may remain unknown. Dallas Drainage Pros does not warrant another contractor’s installation simply because we inspect it, but discovering an accessible problem before it is buried can be extraordinarily valuable.
Maintaining the System After Construction
The same philosophy continues after the project is complete. Drainage and waterproofing systems require maintenance to remain effective. Depending on the property and system, Dallas Drainage Pros may recommend service annually or multiple times per year. Systems incorporating sump pumps, basements, heavy debris exposure, substantial groundwater, or other elevated risks may require more frequent inspection and maintenance.
For qualifying Dallas Drainage Pros-installed systems, regular maintenance can also be part of maintaining extended warranty eligibility. Depending on the system and materials, qualifying drainage and waterproofing installations may be eligible for extended coverage of up to 10 or 20 years when the applicable requirements are met.
Whether we installed the system or someone else did, the principle remains the same: Drainage should not be forgotten simply because it is underground — It should be accessible, It should be inspectable, It should be maintained.
And when construction is still underway, it should be checked before someone builds something expensive over it.
