Move Rainwater Away From Your Home Before It Becomes a Problem

When rainwater collects around your foundation, pools in the yard, or causes erosion across your property, the problem often starts at the surface. Surface drainage systems collect rainwater where it accumulates and carry it to a safe discharge location.

At Dallas Drainage Pros, two of the most common tools we use to accomplish this are downspout drainage connections and catch basin drains. But installing drains is only part of the solution. A successful drainage system starts with understanding where the water is coming from, why it’s collecting, and where it can safely go.

What Is Surface Drainage?

  • Rain falling directly onto the yard
  • Roof runoff discharged through gutters and downspouts
  • Water flowing from uphill areas
  • Runoff from patios, driveways and other hard surfaces
  • Low areas where rainwater naturally collects

Whenever possible, good grading should allow water to naturally flow away from the home.

But many Dallas-area properties don’t have enough elevation change to rely on grading alone. Other properties have isolated low spots, large roof areas or physical obstacles that make additional drainage necessary.

That’s where catch basins and downspout drainage systems come in.

 

Downspout Drainage: Gutters Are Only Half the Solution

Gutters are extremely important, but they don’t actually eliminate water. They collect and concentrate it. During a heavy storm, a large roof can collect thousands of gallons of rainwater. The gutter system directs that water into a relatively small number of downspouts. The question becomes:

Where does the water go next?

If a downspout terminates beside the house, a tremendous amount of roof runoff can be discharged into one small area. That can contribute to:

  • Erosion around the foundation
  • Standing water beside the house
  • Oversaturated foundation soils
  • Water intrusion
  • Excess moisture around crawlspaces or basements
  • Damage to landscaping
  • Foundation movement associated with changing soil moisture

Extending a downspout a few feet away from the house may help in some situations. But when the property doesn’t naturally carry that water away, a more complete solution may be to connect the downspouts to an underground drainage system.

How Downspout Drainage Works

Downspouts can be connected to solid underground drainage pipe that carries roof runoff away from the foundation to an appropriate discharge location.

Depending on the property’s elevation and layout, that may include discharge:

  • To a lower area of the property
  • Toward an appropriate street or right-of-way location
  • Through a curb outlet where permitted
  • To another approved drainage location
  • Into a sump system when gravity drainage isn’t possible

The goal is simple: Don’t just collect roof water. Get it safely away from the house.

Catch Basin Drains for Standing Water and Surface Runoff

catch basin drains Dallas Drainage ProsCatch basins serve a different purpose. Instead of collecting water from a downspout, a catch basin collects water flowing across the ground. These drains are commonly installed in low areas where water naturally accumulates, such as:

  • Low spots in lawns
  • Areas between homes
  • Near patios and outdoor living spaces
  • Landscape beds
  • Courtyards
  • Areas receiving runoff from hard surfaces
  • Locations where grading cannot provide adequate natural drainage

Catch Basins Have to Be Installed in the Right Place

A catch basin only works when water can reach it. This sounds obvious, but it is one of the most important principles of surface drainage design. Simply placing a drain in an area that gets wet doesn’t necessarily solve the problem. The surrounding elevations must direct water toward the drain.

That’s why we evaluate both drainage and grading when designing a surface water system. Sometimes the solution is a catch basin. Sometimes it’s regrading. Often it’s a combination of both.

Catch Basins vs. French Drains: What’s the Difference?

Catch Basins Collect Surface Water

If you can watch rainwater flowing across the yard and collecting in a low area, you’re dealing primarily with surface water. A catch basin or another surface drainage solution may be appropriate.

French Drains Intercept Water Within the Soil

A French drain is primarily intended to manage subsurface water moving through saturated soil. For example, groundwater migrating downhill toward a foundation may require a properly positioned French drain rather than a surface catch basin.

This distinction matters. Installing a French drain for a surface-water problem can add unnecessary cost and complexity. Installing a catch basin where the actual problem is groundwater may fail to address the source altogether. The right drainage system depends on where the water is coming from.

One System Can Manage Multiple Sources of Surface Water

Many properties don’t have just one drainage problem. A home might have six downspouts producing concentrated roof runoff, a low area collecting rainwater, and a patio generating additional surface runoff. A properly designed system can often incorporate several collection points into a coordinated drainage network. For example:

All of these can ultimately move water toward an appropriate discharge location. The system should be sized and configured based on the amount of water it needs to handle, the available elevation, pipe routing and the characteristics of the property.

Why Grading Comes First

Drainage pipe shouldn’t automatically be the first answer to every wet yard. Water naturally flows downhill, so whenever possible, we want to use positive grading and gravity to our advantage. A properly graded yard directs surface water away from the home and toward an appropriate drainage path.

If a yard slopes toward the foundation, simply adding drains without considering the grade may leave the underlying problem unresolved. During a drainage assessment, we look at the relationship between:

  • The foundation
  • Existing yard elevations
  • Property boundaries
  • Neighboring properties
  • Roof and downspout locations
  • Patios, driveways and hardscape
  • Existing drains
  • Available discharge locations

From there, we can determine where grading can do the work naturally and where drainage infrastructure is actually needed.

Why Surface Drainage Systems Fail

Having drains doesn’t necessarily mean a property has good drainageWe frequently evaluate existing systems that aren’t working because of problems such as:

  • Catch basins installed outside the actual low point
  • Poor grading around the drain
  • Downspouts terminating beside the foundation
  • Insufficient pipe capacity
  • Improper pipe slope
  • Poorly selected discharge locations
  • Clogged or damaged drainage lines
  • Systems that attempt to move water uphill without a pump
  • Surface drains being used to address a groundwater problem
  • Too many water sources being concentrated into an undersized system

Good drainage isn’t simply about installing more drains. It’s about designing a system around how water actually moves through the property.
